Field note
First-piece checks that supervisors actually trust
17 June 2025
First-piece sheets lose trust when they are filled after the line has already run for an hour. Supervisors then treat the form as paperwork rather than a gate.
Tie the first-piece moment to a real pause: tool change, material lot change, or shift start. The check should happen before volume builds, not after.
Keep the sheet short. Measure the dimensions or attributes that later scrap codes prove matter. Extra fields that never connect to scrap become noise.
Have the supervisor initial the sheet only after seeing the sample, not after seeing a stamp. That small step keeps ownership on the floor.
At the weekly quality talk, compare first-piece fails with scrap that appeared later the same day. When the link is visible, supervisors defend the check instead of rushing past it.
